The Indian automotive industry is one of the largest in the world, currently sitting on the 4th spot, just a spot below a podium finish. Riding on the backs of a young population and a rising middle class, the Indian auto sector has been growing at a steady pace. And while this year saw a bit of a slump, market and investor sentiments still remain hopeful of the coming year being a good one, especially on account of all the new car launches expected in 2020.
The future, however, is a discussion for another time. This holiday season, amongst all the end of the year festivities, we take a look at and honour some of the star performers of 2019. These are some of the ones that made the top 10, although they’re not necessarily listed here in the same order.
Maruti Suzuki Alto
The flagship hatchback of the Maruti Suzuki clan, the Alto recently got a facelift and it looks stunning. Economically priced and ergonomically designed, the new Alto comes with a stylish new front grille and sharp headlights that only serve to enhance its appeal, as do the new dual tone interiors. Apart from features such as smart Reverse Parking sensors and a crisp, new infotainment system with Smartplay Studio, the incredible mileages provided by the Alto have helped it regain the top spot in terms of sales rankings, selling over a quarter of a million units in 2019.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
The Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Maruti Suzuki Dzire have both managed to get a podium finish, with the Dzire claiming the runner-up position, close on the heels of the Alto. A smoothly styled sedan, the Dzire has managed to incorporate state-of-the-art tech, such as Auto Gear Shift, Smart Keyless Entry and Automatic Climate Control, all provided at a price that does not burn a hole in your pockets. And its powerful 4-cylinder 1197cc engine still manages to provide you with an incredible 21km plus mileage for the petrol version.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
Here’s another one from the Maruti Suzuki coterie to have made it to the list. And this one’s a compact SUV. With a tagline that says ‘Play Glamorous’, the Brezza is a glamorously bold, with a capital B too. Neat sporty design on the exterior, the Brezza comes with a dual-toned floating roof. Apart from features like push-start and the brand’s own SmartPlay infotainment system, the Vitara Brezza also has ones such as cruise control, auto headlamps and rain-sensing wipers that place it a notch above the rest. It’s no wonder that the Brezza has managed to sell over 0.2 million units this year.
Hyundai Elite i20
The first from Hyundai to make it to the top 10, the Elite i20 is both stylish and spacious to the core. Available in 4 trim levels viz. Era, Magna+, Sportz+ and Asta(O), the Elite i20 is packed with features such as parking assist, connected car tech with voice recognition, push button start, and wireless charging, to name only a few. Powered by a 1.2L Kappa engine for the petrol version and a 1.4L U2 CRDi engine for the diesel one, the Elite i20 certainly packs a punch, and the over 0.14 million units sold countrywide are more than justification enough.
Rivalling the Brezza on this list is an SUV from Hyundai that has managed to win hearts with its exemplary features, design, comfort and power. Be it the car’s 17.77 cm touchscreen AVN System or the smart key band, the Hyundai Creta is packed with features. It is also available in a sports edition version, with additional features such as a smart electric sunroof and smoked bi-functional projector headlamps. This one just manages to make the top 10 list with a little over 0.12 million units having been sold across India this year.
