With smoke and pollution becoming an everyday affair in metropolitan cities and with the weather becoming increasingly erratic, the global warming crisis has forced countries across the globe to take certain stringent actions in order to curb emissions. In one such bid, the Government of India introduced emission standards in 2000 in order to regulate the output of pollutants from engines, especially those of automobiles.
Known as Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES), currently, Bharat Stage IV (BS-4) norms are in place all over the country. However, given the urgency of the climate crises, the government has announced that it will be skipping BS-5 and will directly be moving on to BS-6 emission norms. In October last year, the Supreme Court ordered a ban on the sale and registration of BS-4 compliant vehicles, effective from the 1st of April, 2020.
Now, as the automotive industry prepares for a mammoth shift from BS-4 to BS-6 compliant vehicles, a number of automotive giants have begun introducing models that comply with BS-6 emission norms, although there aren’t too many options available as of yet. Let us take a look at some of the best BS-6 compliant cars that are available in India at under ₹30 lakh.
The Jeep Compass Trailhawk (starting price ex-showroom ₹26.8 lakh)
With a tagline that says ‘Superior by Nature’, the Jeep Compass Trailhawk is certainly one of the flagship models rolled out by Jeep in India. Extremely spacious and with premium leather fittings on the inside, stylish aerodynamic exteriors and sporting Jeep’s distinctive 4×4 drive systems, the Trailhawk holds a powerful 2.0L Multijet II Turbo Diesel BS-6 compliant engine underneath its hood mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.
Kia Seltos (starting price ex-showroom ₹9.69 lakh)
After making an impression at the Delhi Auto Show last year, the South Korean automotive giant Kia Motors then went on to launch the Seltos in India, targeting the millions of tech-savvy millennials in the country. While stunning on the inside as well as on the outside, it is the finer details such as having the HUD in the driver’s line of sight and Remote Engine Start with AC Control (and more than 30 other features) using the UVO connect service that set the Seltos apart from the rest. The 1.4L turbocharged BS-6 compliant engine in the Seltos will come with a choice of 3 automatic variants -IVT, 7DCT, 6AT.
Hyundai Elantra (starting price ex-showroom ₹15.89 lakh)
Sporty to look at, yet extremely comfortable and luxurious on the inside, the all-new Hyundai Elantra makes quite the first impression. The Elantra comes with Hyundai blueLink connected car tech, as well as features such as an electrically controlled smart sunroof and even a smart trunk system that opens in a mere 3 seconds. The Hyundai Elantra is a premium sedan that comes equipped with a Nu 2.0L petrol engine that is mated to a 6-speed transmission, with options of both manual and automatic drive.
