The much awaited 2017 Hyundai Verna has finally rolled out for the Indian market, with some great cosmetic and feature updates. While the engine’s setup has been carried over from the previous generation, Hyundai has done away with the 1.4L petrol and diesel motors in the new model. However, it continues to feature the 1.6L larger capacity gasoline and oil burner units. Both these units offer improved fuel efficiency over the older models. The sedan sports both a 6-speed manual gearbox and 6-speed torque converter automatic as transmission options. Here is our expert panel’s review on the new launch.
External Face-lift: In line with Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 Design philosophy, the new Verna is more angular in design, giving it a more executive and upmarket appeal. The biggest change is the sedan face, which now gets a cascading hexagonal grille along with projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights as well as LED taillights and fog lamps. The bonnet is also new with a revised sculpted bumper.
This car has been built on the new K2 platform, made of high strength steel that supports rigidity and crash worthiness. The suspension mechanism is also new suggesting enhanced dynamics and handling. Other features are variant-wise, for example, the top variants S and SX(O) are exclusively fitted with 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, whereas the other variants ride on 15-inch steel or alloy wheels.
Cabin Interior: The interior styling on the new Verna comes in a dual tone finish with new designs for the dashboard in soft touch plastic and brushed aluminium on the centre console. The top variants boast of a 7-inch infotainment system compatible with both iOS and Android smart phones. Featuring voice-recognition and app-based navigation, it also gets Mirror Link with the Hyundai iBlue audio app. The entry-level variants will have the smaller 5-inch colour TFT LCD instrument display with Arkamys sound system. The new ‘cool’ feature, a first for this segment is the introduction of cooled/ ventilated seats which will be a blessing in our Indian summers. Some other creature comforts are cruise control, rear AC vents and a sun-roof. The top variants will have leather upholstery on the seats and door pads.
The Safety Aspect: With regards to safety, the new-generation Hyundai Verna is offering dual front airbags with ABS (anti-lock brakes) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution) as a standard fitment across all variants. In addition, the top variants will have 6 airbags (front, side and curtain) and a rear view camera.
Other Specifications: The new Verna will has four variants, namely the E, EX, SX and the SX (O). The car is set to be available in seven colours, of which four are brand new. Pricing will fall in the range of Rs.7.99 –12.61 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, it is important to note that Hyundai India has announced that these are introductory prices that will be valid only for the first 20,000 customers of the Hyundai Verna 2017.
With a sportier design and new features, the next-generation Hyundai Verna promises to take driving to the next level.
