Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has seen great success with most of its models, and has gained a strong foothold in the Indian market, bagging the distinction of being the largest selling car manufacturer. Not one to rest on its laurels, this automaker has set great expectations for the third-generation version of its much-appreciated Wagon R model, with a list of upgraded features, modern design and enhanced safety features. The car that captured the hearts of over 20 lakh Indians plans to make its reappearance sometime this year. Let’s take a look at what Wagon R 2018 has to offer.
The Outside: The New Wagon R which is expected to be unveiled at the Auto Expo 2018 is likely to undergo a design change. Although it retains its USP of “boxy” architecture, the India-specific model will look contemporary and stylish, probably sharing design cues from its Japanese counterpart. This next-gen version will also sport Suzuki’s new lightweight platform TECT (Total Effective Control Technology) creating a lighter and safer utility-vehicle. In terms of aesthetics, more chrome to the existing fascia, a large grille, bulkier rectangular headlamps and wider bumpers providing a fresher look, are said to be in the works. The side profile, particularly the rear windows, as well as the hind profile in terms of the positioning of the lights, are all expected to be revamped.
The Inside: A more practical, premium-looking and spacious cabin is expected. Interiors will be made of better quality material, with a better feel in an all-black treatment. New steering wheel design with audio controls, dashboard and digital infotainment system are reasons enough to make this car more appealing and attractive. An integrated 2 DIN system with bluetooth, reverse sensors and even keyless entry may be offered in higher variants. The standard safety gear like dual airbags and ABS will be available. Since the Wagon R is big on comfort, expect a larger boot and ample in-cabin head and leg room.
Under the hood: The Wagon-R is known for great performance and mileage and hence the 1.0-litre K-Series engine stays put on the next-gen Wagon-R too. In fact, thanks to the new platform, an even better mileage could be derived. With the same maximum power output of 67 bhp offering a peak torque of 91 Nm, the lighter body will ensure enhanced performance as well. It will continue to be offered in 5-speed manual transmission as a standard with an optional AMT.
Pricing: Considering that the next generation car has a modern platform, new design and better features, it is only justified to expect a higher price range, starting from 4.5 lakhs and going up to 6 lakhs for a fully-loaded trim variant.
This offering is anticipated to be launched in India sometime in the latter half of this year, but given its practicality and promise of a better ownership experience, the 3rd-gen Wagon R will be a much-awaited launch for many.
