FASTag – a tool facilitating automatic payments at toll booths has been made compulsory for all kinds of vehicles on all NHs in India from 1st December this year. A sticker that helps in executing toll payments using RFID, FASTag is expected to reduce fuel loss and wastage of time while waiting at the booths. RBI is also proposing to use FASTags for collecting parking fees and fuel transactions during refilling.

This simple to use, reloadable tag is fixed on the vehicle and has a lifetime potency but is not applicable to vehicles that do not have to pay the toll. It is supported by MORTH, NHAI, IHMCL, and NPCI.

How to purchase – You can purchase and operate FASTag from any Point of Sales venue – assigned banks like SBI, HDFC, Bank of Baroda, Axis bank, City Union bank; toll booths, PayTM, Amazon and RTA offices. It can also be bought online from www.fastag.org or from the ‘My FASTag’ app. If you buy it online, you can get it through your bank or other payment modes. You can download the form online and submit with said documents. After buying it you have to recharge as per your requirement.

Documents required while applying –

  1. Vehicle’s registration certificate.
  2. Owner’s passport size photographs.
  3. ID proof and address proof.

A colour code is provided for FASTags depending upon the category of vehicle. The card itself costs Rs 100 and there is a refundable deposit of Rs 200. To motivate the public the Ministry had exempted the Rs 100 fee till 30th Nov.

How to use – The tag is attached to the vehicle and when the vehicle passes through any toll booth, the corresponding toll charge gets deducted, allowing the passengers to drive through the booth without pausing for cash transactions, thus saving time and fuel. As soon as the vehicle moves through the toll, an SMS with the date, time, amount and transaction is sent on the number registered to the FASTag.

The entire process helps in hassle free payment and encourages non-stop movement through the booth.

How to recharge – Recharging can be done online or offline using credit and debit cards, NEFT, RTGS, Net banking or cheques. Each issuing mode has its own norms that make the process swift and simple. You can recharge for any amount between Rs 100 to Rs 1 lakh at a time.

How to check balance – As soon as you buy a FASTag, you can check the amount on the issuer’s website; you will also get an SMS alert. After every transaction you will be informed through SMS on the registered mobile number. If any problem crops up or the tag is lost then you can call up the customer care number of the issuer and block your account. After a new account is made, the balance from the previous account is transferred to the newer one.
