There can be nothing more exciting to ring in the New Year than going on long drives with friends and family. With the festive and holiday season in full swing, the perfectly cool winter weather can set the tone for road revelers.

You can drive tirelessly on roads that stretch like black velvet in front, and enjoy the journey more than your desired, popular destination. The natural add-ons: the fields, rivers, mountains, villages and hamlets that you enjoy en route, are like the yummilicious icing on the cake, not to forget the food joints.  Let’s check out some road routes that can really provide a truckload of memories.

  1. Jodhpur to Jaisalmer: ‘And miles to go before I sleep’! There couldn’t have been a more apt description of this road journey on NH 114 and NH 15, across the vast expanse of never-ending golden sands, in the ethereal Thar Desert. You can stop by at some lesser known tourist destination like Bikaner and enjoy the universally known Rajasthani hospitality and cuisine. Taking day/night breaks in old, palatial mansions turned into hotels/resorts or in traditional havelis converted into homestays, can be good options to rest your fatigued bodies.

  1. Mumbai to Udaipur: Cover 3 states (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan) in just a day and a half. With the driving distance just being 760 km (approx.), the roads are a pleasure to drive on. You can take breaks in the cities of Vapi, Surat and Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat. Other than enjoying the City of Lakes, Udaipur, you can take day/one-night trip to the hill station of Mount Abu or the world renowned historical city of Chittorgarh. For the spiritual souls, the famous Nathdwara and Dilwara temples are just a stone’s throw away from Udaipur.

  1. Shimla to Manali via Mandi: Well, what can you say about the journey when the starting point and the destination are so breathtakingly beautiful? Clouds, mountains, valleys, rivers shall be your friends on this enchanting road route. Take time out to stop by and dip your feet in the icy-cold water of River Beas that trudges alongside as you are tucked in your comfortable vehicle. Drive cautiously on the 250 km stretch of hilly terrain as the beauty of the Queen of Mountains (Himachal) will distract you every single moment of the drive.

  1. Delhi to Agra: Get on the Yamuna Expressway to cover the Golden Triangle of Delhi-Jaipur-Agra. A long drive cannot get better as this route is easily one of the best roads in the country. Though getting onto the Expressway from Delhi (merely 60 km) can be tedious, the drive on the 165 km stretch of the YE is a sheer delight for road enthusiasts and can be covered easily in 2-3 hours.

4

  1. Gangtok to Lake Tsomgo and Nathula Pass: Ahh, the North-East and its unparalleled beauty! The hilly terrain on this road route is challenging and unpredictable, but the larger-than-life beauty of the surroundings compensates for this and much more. Driving down from Gangtok to Lake Tsomgo, also called Changu, especially in winters, can be an experience of a lifetime.
